In the works of abstract art, pure non-objective abstraction or figurative abstraction, under the cover of formal methods it is always possible to distinguish implicit in their content.

The visual image can exist either in the works of figurative painting, or in the works of abstract painting. In abstract art the visual image displays its qualities and properties even in the greater degree. In similar pictures such an image works together with a set of formal methods (compositional and color structure, beautiful texture). In the abstract painting a visual image, created by formal means, directly appeals to the subconscious level of perception of objects, bypassing the figurative level of descriptiveness. The content of visual image in abstract art is more accurately read by the audience, because it is not floundered by verbose figurative. The visual image in the works of figurative art is perceived indirectly, through a combination of different images, which, like the letters in the word that does not make sense individually, together represent an object or phenomenon. The visual image in figurative painting, in contrast to the image in abstract works, can be verbalized. This is the main differences between them.
